Big shout out to the 13 kids and teens who sorted hundreds of school supplies and packed 150 ‘back to school’ packs for kids of all ages who are victims of domestic violence and living in shelters. Lieske from Women’s Community Shelters who came and spoke to us this morning sent this email: “As I mentioned, I will be sending backpacks up to our Great Lakes Shelter today to children who have walked through the door with nothing… so thank you so much on their behalf…”
Vincentian House and Salvation Army shelters also very gratefully received packs to distribute to children, some of whom are only just starting school for the first time. Project Officer Katie from Vincentian House sent us a note of thanks: http://kidsgivingback.org/vincentian/
Alex, 14, one of this morning’s volunteers said “I really felt I was making a difference, getting kids off to a good start with all their supplies to enable them to learn properly”.
A huge behind-the-scenes collaborative effort enabled this project to take place. Online group collection platform, Group Together initiated the project, joining forces with Kids Giving Back and Thread Together (where this morning’s sorting was held). We received generous donations of supplies from Marbig, as well as Big W, Smiggle and K-Mart. And we are so grateful to the many generous families who donated through GroupTogether, enabling us to purchase additional supplies to fill the backpacks.
