Scones & Stories

Scones and Stories is a unique intergenerational initiative by Kids Giving Back that brings together students and aged care residents for meaningful connection, conversation, and fun.

The experience begins with a thoughtful letter exchange, allowing both students and residents to introduce themselves and share a little about their lives. This personal touch sets the tone for the upcoming in-person interaction.

Before meeting the residents, students receive a pre-visit briefing led by a Kids Giving Back facilitator. In this session, they learn about respectful engagement, the importance of active listening, and are taught inclusive games designed to spark laughter and interaction between generations.

Depending on group size and logistics, the face-to-face gathering takes place either at the school or at the aged care facility. On the day, students and residents come together to enjoy fresh scones and jam, provided by Kids Giving Back. They exchange stories, play games, and form bonds that leave a lasting impression on both groups. This program has proven mental health benefits for both young and older participants. For students, it builds empathy, confidence, and a sense of social responsibility. For aged care residents, it offers companionship, mental stimulation, and a joyful break from isolation.

With youth mental health and elder loneliness on the rise, Scones and Stories is a simple but powerful way to bring two generations together for mutual connection, learning, and wellbeing.
