Scones & Stories Outcomes:
Stage 2

Outcome: PH2-RRS-01: Describes and applies skills and strategies to strengthen respectful relationships.

Students:

  • demonstrate empathy and respect for others
  • practise active listening and effective communication
  • recognise the importance of inclusion and belonging
  • build positive relationships through cooperation and kindness

How this is addressed in Scones & Stories

Students develop communication and active listening skills through meaningful conversations with older Australians. They learn how respectful interactions, empathy and kindness help build positive relationships across generations.

Outcome: PH2-IHW-01: Explains how related factors influence identity, health and wellbeing.

Students:

  • recognise how positive relationships contribute to wellbeing
  • understand how helping others can improve individual and community wellbeing
  • identify ways to contribute positively to the wellbeing of others
  • reflect on actions that promote belonging and connectedness

How this is addressed in Scones & Stories

Students discover how social connection and meaningful relationships contribute to wellbeing for both older adults and young people. Through volunteering, students reflect on how acts of kindness can improve their own wellbeing while positively impacting others.

Outcome: HS2-HIS-01: Explains how people lived in the past.

Students:

  • ask questions about people’s lives and experiences
  • identify similarities and differences between life in the past and life today
  • recognise that oral histories provide evidence about how people lived

During Scones & Storiesstudents engage with older Australians and collect information through oral histories – a recognised historical source. By listening to residents share stories about their childhoods, schooling, family life and communities, students:

  • investigate how daily life has changed over time
  • compare life in the past with their own experiences today
  • ask thoughtful questions to deepen their understanding
  • use personal stories as evidence to learn about Australia’s recent past
  • appreciate that people’s lived experiences contribute to our understanding of history.

This authentic intergenerational experience helps students understand that history is not only found in books and artefacts but also in the memories and stories of people in their own community.

Outcome: HS2-GEO-01: Explains how people care for Australia’s environments and participate in Australian society, using geographical information.

Students:

  • investigate how individuals contribute positively to communities
  • identify ways people participate in Australian society
  • recognise the importance of active citizenship
  • explore how communities support the wellbeing of different groups
  • examine how people work together to meet community needs

How this is addressed in Scones & Stories

Students investigate the role of volunteers, community organisations and aged-care providers in supporting older Australians. They actively contribute to community wellbeing through participating in morning tea, engaging respectfully with residents and participating in an authentic intergenerational volunteering experience.
