Cook4Good Outcomes: Stage 5

Outcome: PH5-SHW-01: Analyses the interrelationship between contextual factors, attitudes and behaviours to promote safety, health and wellbeing.

Students:

  • examine social and economic factors that can influence health and wellbeing
  • explore how circumstances can affect access to food and essential resources
  • consider the relationship between food insecurity, disadvantage and wellbeing
  • examine attitudes and assumptions surrounding people experiencing hardship
  • consider how individual and community actions can promote wellbeing
  • recognise the role of community organisations in supporting vulnerable populations

How this is addressed in Cook4Good

Students explore food insecurity as a complex community wellbeing issue, considering some of the social and economic circumstances that can result in individuals and families requiring food assistance. Students examine attitudes and assumptions associated with homelessness and disadvantage and consider the importance of approaching community support with dignity, empathy and respect. They then move from discussion to practical action by preparing nutritious meals for a charity partner supporting people experiencing hardship.

Outcome: PH5-SMI-01: Evaluates and adapts self-management and interpersonal skills to manage complex situations.

Students:

  • communicate and collaborate effectively within a team
  • demonstrate initiative, responsibility and leadership
  • manage time, tasks and individual responsibilities
  • adapt to challenges and changing circumstances

How this is addressed in Cook4Good

Students work collaboratively in a practical cooking environment to prepare, cook, portion and package meals. They are required to manage roles and responsibilities, communicate effectively, follow processes, solve problems and work within time constraints. Students can then evaluate their contribution to the overall outcome and recognise how individual effort becomes collective impact when a group works towards a shared community goal.

Outcome: PH5-RRL-01: Evaluates and applies strategies for promoting and maintaining safe and respectful relationships in a range of contexts.

Students:

  • consider perspectives and experiences different from their own
  • examine stereotypes and assumptions
  • demonstrate empathy and respect
  • recognise the importance of dignity and inclusion
  • communicate respectfully when discussing complex social issues
  • consider how attitudes and behaviours influence relationships and communities

How this is addressed in Cook4Good

Students explore the experiences of people who may require community food support and consider how stereotypes can shape attitudes towards homelessness, poverty and food insecurity. Facilitated discussion encourages students to consider the individual behind the circumstance and recognise that there are many pathways that can lead someone to require assistance. Cook4Good encourages students to move from sympathy to empathy and informed action, demonstrating respect through practical service.

Outcome: PH5-IBC-01: Analyses how identity and a sense of belonging contribute to the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.

Students:

  • analyse the relationship between belonging, connection and wellbeing
  • consider how social inclusion and exclusion can affect individuals
  • explore the role community participation can play in creating connection
  • examine how contributing to others can build purpose and belonging
  • recognise the relationship between individual and community wellbeing

How this is addressed in Cook4Good

Students consider how connection, inclusion and belonging contribute to wellbeing, particularly for people experiencing hardship or social isolation. Through volunteering, students become active contributors to their community. They reflect on how giving their time and skills to support others can also strengthen their own sense of purpose, connection and belonging. This creates an important reciprocal message: volunteering benefits the community while also having the potential to positively influence the young person participating.

Outcome: GE5-PER-01: Accounts for the perspectives of people and organisations on a range of geographical opportunities and challenges.

Students can:

  • examine different perspectives on food insecurity and human wellbeing
  • consider how access to resources varies between people and communities
  • explore how charities and community organisations respond to community needs
  • consider different approaches to improving human wellbeing
  • recognise the interconnections between people, resources, organisations and communities

How this is addressed in Cook4Good

Students investigate food insecurity and access to nutritious food as issues connected to human wellbeing. They learn about the charity partner receiving their meals and consider the perspectives and responses of individuals, volunteers and community organisations working to address food insecurity. Students then become part of the community response themselves by preparing meals for people experiencing hardship.
